Copilandia is a copyright-free island that floats along with the tectonic shifts of culture. Equipped with art materials, copiers of all media, computers, and sound systems, Copilandia multiplies, disseminates and celebrates the free exchange and circulation of art and ideas. Originally presented as part of the Sevilla, Entre_Culturas Festival (2005-06), GRATIS proposes that Copilandia moor itself in Peekskill, NY as part of the public arts program the Peekskill Project. Peekskill’s location on the Hudson River and it’s proximity to both a socially and culturally diverse population makes it the perfect site for the project. Copilandia’s flexible format can either be docked on a boat or ferry or installed in a storefront in either the downtown or river front district. >Originally presented as part of the Sevilla, Entre_Culturas Festival (2005-06), GRATIS proposes that Copilandia moor itself in Peekskill , NY as part of the public arts program the Peekskill Project. While moored in Peekskill , the public will find works of art contributed by over 300 artists who have responded to an open call for submissions. All works will be donated with the understanding that they may be freely manipulated, duplicated or appropriated. Within this environment of digital and analogical technologies, there will be digital imagery, photographs, drawings, paintings and sculptures that can be copied or transformed on paper, burned on CDs or printed on t-shirts or other media. The visitor will also find the instructions and ingredients to fabricate a number of artists' works. There will be music mash-ups, and artists' sound works to download, videos to watch, all with the ability to copy them to CD or DVD at their leisure. As with Copilandia's earlier inception, there will be works that can be taken freely, like Yoko Ono's rubber stamp Imagine Peace , and books, pamphlets, and essays to read that explore ideas surrounding intellectual property rights, copyleft, the creative commons, and pirate utopias. Included in the Copilandia library will be testimonials by artists on their ideas and experiences relating to copying and originality. Members of GRATIS will be on hand to provide assistance and add context to the works on exhibit. Scheduled and impromptu workshops will be held that highlight selections of works so that, in the end, every artists' project will have had a chance to be explored. Artists' talks, performances, musical events, video screenings and panel discussions will fill out each day so that Copilandia can become a temporary autonomous zone, where the public and artists can experiment and interact freely with the art and ideas. The public, exposed to a wide range of art that promotes an alternative gift economy, will be encouraged to use all of the media and technology provided in order to copy or add their input to the ever growing dialogue. |
